Situated between 23.85 square kilometers in Vavad, Koduvally, and Puthur villages, our Koduvally Municipality is bounded on the north-east by Kozhikode district, on the west by the Poonoor River, on the east by the Cherupuzha River, on the north by Thamarassery Grama Panchayat, and on the south by Kunnamangalam Grama Panchayat.
Koduvally Panchayat was one of the three panchayats formed in Malabar in 1938. The erstwhile Koduvally Panchayat included areas such as the present Omassery Grama Panchayat, and Parappanpoyil and Karadi in Thamarassery Grama Panchayat. Sri. T.K. Pareekutty Adhikari was the first president of Koduvally Panchayat, which was within the operational jurisdiction of the Malabar District Board. At a time when panchayat members were elected by raising hands, wards were called blocks. Executive power of the panchayat was then vested in the president. Acting also as a village Munsiff court, the president possessed the authority to deliver judgments in cases within the panchayat.
In the old Koduvally, there were only three government institutions: the Registrar Office, Amsakachery, and Post Office. As part of the national movement, individuals such as Oruwamkundil Kannankuyati, M.K. Parameswaran Nambeesan, V. Pachukutty, and M. Velukutty, who participated in the Salt Satyagraha, also led the struggles for the upliftment of Harijans and temple entry for backward communities. Cheriya Vallikkattu Alikkunhi Sahib was a close follower of Muhammed Abdul Rahiman Sahib.
Desaposhini Reading Room is the first reading room in Koduvally. Mariveettil Ukkarankutty Nair renamed this reading room to Gandhi Smaraka Vayanasala. During the era when Adhikaris administered Koduvally, Vallikkattu Imbichimothy, Poyil Abdulla, and Pariyeyikutty served as administrators in positions equivalent to today's Village Officers. They also heard cases and delivered judgments at the local level.
Significant progress occurred in Koduvally after the establishment of institutions like Koduvally High School and Karuvanpoyil L.P. School. Currently, four government L.P. schools, two U.P. schools, two higher secondary schools, and one Government Residential ITI are operating at the government level in Koduvally. Additionally, two L.P. schools and one U.P. school in the aided sector, and one higher secondary school and one arts & science college in the unaided sector are functioning.
In 1964, Sri. K.V. Moyinkutty Haji, followed by Sri. Makkat Madhavan Namboodiri, and subsequently Sri. T.K. Pariyeyikutty Haji became Grama Panchayat Presidents. The term of this panchayat governing body was sixteen years. In 1978, Sri. E.C. Cheriyammad Haji, and at various stages Adv. P.T.A. Rahim, Smt. P.T. Subaitha Rahim, Sri. Vayoli Muhammed Master, and lastly Smt. Raseeja Ibrahim served as presidents of Koduvally Grama Panchayat. Koduvally has been able to achieve the progress we see today as a result of the visionary work of the rulers of the respective eras.
The Koduvally Grama Panchayat, which had urbanized under the then-Kerala government led by Sri. Oommen Chandy, was elevated to Koduvally Municipality with effect from November 1, 2015, transforming it into the municipality we see today. The first chairperson of Koduvally Municipality was Smt. Shareefa Kannadipoyil. She served as the municipal chairperson during the 2015–2020 period. Subsequently, Sri. Vellaru Abdu served as the municipal chairperson for the 2020–2025 period. Sri. A.P. Majeed Master, Smt. Sushini K.M., and Smt. V.C. Noorjahan have served as deputy chairpersons of the municipality. Currently, a governing body with Smt. Safeena Shameer as Chairperson and Sri. K.K.A. Kader as Deputy Chairperson is leading the Koduvally Municipality.
